The Catalan Government approved today the awarding of the Narcís Monturiol Medal for scientific and technological merit to Gustavo Slafer, among other nine researchers of the Catalan knowledge system, as well as the Narcís Monturiol Plaque for the Archaeology Museum of Catalonia.

Slafer is also an ICREA research professor at the University of Lleida and honorary professor at the University of Nottingham (United Kingdom) and Buenos Aires (Argentina). His research focuses on the physiological bases of collard yields to increase production with an efficient use of resources, improving sustainability and reducing environmental impact.

Together with Slafer, they will also receive the Narcís Monturiol Medal 2024: Jordi Alberch Vié (Universitat de Barcelona – UB), Anna Alberni Jordà (UB), Anna Alberni Jordà (CSIC), Àngel Lozano Solsona (Universitat Pompeu Fabra – UPF), Emilio Palomares Gil (ICIQ), Ana Isabel Pérez Neira (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya – UPC), Petia Radeva (UB), Marta Reynal Querol (UPF), and Antonio Villaverde Corrales (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona-UAB).

These awards, instituted by the Generalitat in 1982, honour individuals and organisations for their outstanding contribution to the development of science and technology in Catalonia and are named after the 19th-century Catalan inventor and politician Narcís Monturiol Estarriol. Since 1982, the Catalan Government has awarded 311 medals (238 to men and 73 to women) and 48 plaques for institutions. Among the laureates there are other Agrotecnio researchers: Paul Christou (2020), Olga Martín (2018), Ramon Albajes (2002) and Ignacio Romagosa (1998).
