Isabel Blanco-Penedo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Animal Science at the University of Lleida and an Adjunct Senior Lecturer in the Department of Clinical Sciences at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU).
Her research focuses on the challenges of animal health and welfare within the context of sustainable livestock systems and the transformations driven by global change. Her career combines research, teaching, knowledge transfer, and veterinary advisory services for organic farming operations.
She is currently involved in projects aimed at addressing the main challenges facing the organic livestock sector, promoting innovative strategies in areas such as positive animal welfare, the One Welfare approach, farm sustainability, and the use and understanding of medicinal plants in veterinary medicine. She also collaborates in international training programmes on animal welfare, sustainability, epidemiology, and the responsible use of antimicrobials.
She is a permanent member of the European Commission’s Expert Group for Technical Advice on Organic Production (EGTOP), Secretary of the Animal Health and Welfare Commission of the European Federation of Animal Science (EAAP), and a founding member of the CIBA Network. Her scientific work contributes to the development of more resilient and sustainable animal production systems that are aligned with current environmental and societal challenges.
