ResOrMa. Improving the resilience of malting barley to climate change
What is it?
The project ‘Improving the resilience of barley and malt to heat stress and pre-harvest sprouting’ is a joint initiative between agro-industrial companies and Agrotecnio’s Plant Physiology Research Group.
In light of the growing effects of climate change, ResOrMa seeks solutions to increase barley’s resistance to two critical and little-studied phenomena: heat waves and pre-harvest sprouting, which negatively affect crop yield, grain quality, malt production, and malt quality for brewing.
Objectives
With a multidisciplinary approach, ResOrMa has the following objectives:
- To develop more resistant barley varieties
- To study the effects of climate change on cultivation.
- To improve the quality of malt and beer.
- To transfer practical solutions to farmers and industry.
- To promote a more sustainable agrifood model.
Who carries it out?
Project partners:
- Malteria La Moravia (Grup Damm)
- Semillas Batlle
- CUPASA
- Crop Physiology research group – Agrotecnio (lead partner)
Funding
Project co-financed by the participating companies and the Department of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda of the Government of Catalonia, through the Operational Groups.
