The ecophysiological characterisation of the response of genotypes in extensive cereal crops (barley and wheat) to Mediterranean environmental conditions is essential for the successful implementation of genetic improvement programmes. Our collaboration with molecular biologists who generate new variability using biotechnological tools allows us to evaluate the performance of new varieties in the field, identifying those suitable for introduction into genetic improvement programmes. Phytoremediation: the use of plant species that are tolerant to high levels of contaminants in soil and water and have a high capacity for bioaccumulation allows for intervention and restoration activities with less environmental impact than traditional techniques, which are more invasive and have adverse side effects.
