My main field of teaching and research is animal nutrition, focusing on protein and amino acid metabolism in mammalian species, both ruminants and non-ruminants. I study protein metabolism to improve nutrient utilisation efficiency, and I also analyse the underlying mechanisms of the relationship between host metabolism and the microbial population that lives in symbiosis in the intestinal compartments. Another aspect of my research is to study and minimise the impact of different livestock production systems on the environment, paying particular attention to the emission of greenhouse gases (such as CH₄ or N₂O) and other important pollutants such as NH₃ and other harmful gases.
