As a soil ecologist, my speciality is assessing soil quality, with a particular emphasis on biological and biochemical methods. I measure the quantities and transformations of organic matter, carbon and nutrients, and characterise the soil microbial community using a range of analytical techniques. In response to widespread degradation of agricultural soils, I am interested in how biological resources and nature-based solutions can be leveraged to promote soil health and soil recarbonisation, while supporting agricultural productivity. My research explores approaches such as soil bioaugmentation (the introduction of beneficial microorganisms), soil biostimulation (the enhancement of indigenous microbial activity), and the application of locally available organic bioresources processed using innovative environmental technologies, all within a circular economy framework.
