BIOCRAFT

Enhancing the Resilience of Agricultural Systems through Integrated Biotechnological Solutions: Smart Crops and Sustainable Biomanufacturing.

What is it?

BIOCRAFT is a European research project that develops innovative biotechnological solutions to enhance crop resilience to climate change and optimize sustainable biomanufacturing processes.

The project combines advanced technologies such as genome editing, artificial intelligence, multi-omics analysis, and soil microbiome research to develop crops that are more efficient, sustainable, and better adapted to environmental challenges.

BIOCRAFT also promotes the use of plants as sustainable platforms for producing high-value compounds for sectors such as food and biomedicine.

Objectives

  • Develop crops that are more resilient to multiple climate and environmental stress factors.
  • Increase crop productivity and efficiency through novel biotechnological strategies.
  • Improve the nutritional quality of food, for example by increasing resistant starch content.
  • Apply advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, gene editing, and multi-omics analyses in plant breeding and crop improvement.
  • Study plant–soil microbiome interactions to enhance the resilience of agricultural systems.
  • Develop plants capable of sustainably producing high-value molecules.
  • Promote a circular bioeconomy based on more efficient and less polluting processes.
  • Contribute to strengthening European food security and reducing dependence on imports.

Who carries it out?

The project is led by Drs. Teresa Capell and Paul Christou.

Funding

Project funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe programme.

Grant Agreement Number: 101307230.
