Our research work focuses mainly on the development of new barley materials for human nutrition and special animal feeds. Our goal is to obtain genotypes with normal, hulled, coloured and colourless grains, with wax (high amylopectin content) and normal endosperm, with a high beta-glucan content for direct human or animal consumption, adapted to Spanish agronomic conditions. We also work on methods for obtaining beta-glucan-enriched barley extracts in order to explore their use as additives for food and feed and other alternative uses. On a personal level, I also provide internal and external support to other groups in complex statistical and quantitative genetic methods.
