Agrotecnio takes part in a congress promoted by the Mediterranean Forum on Water, Energy and Food, with the collaboration of the Catalan Water Agency
The city of Lleida will host the Water and Food Sufficiency Congress on 5 and 6 March 2026, an event of special scientific, business and institutional relevance held within the framework of the activities of the Mediterranean Forum on Water, Energy and Food (MFWEF) and the research groups of the universities that make it up, including those of Granada, Almería, Alicante and Murcia. On this occasion, the MFWEF benefits from the notable collaboration of the Catalan Water Agency (ACA).
The congress will take place at the Auditorium of the Centre for Cultures and Cross-Border Cooperation of the University of Lleida and will bring together highly regarded university specialists, representatives of public bodies, heads of water agencies and experts from the agri-food sector. The aim of the meeting is to analyse the major challenges facing water and food systems in a context marked by climatic, geopolitical and economic crises.
The initiative is co-organised together with researchers from the University of Lleida, Laura Salamero Teixidó and Antonio Ezquerra Huerva, and led by Estanislao Arana García and Esteban Arimany Lamoglia, President and Director of the Mediterranean Forum, respectively. Under their leadership, the congress offers a strongly interdisciplinary programme with a clear Mediterranean and European focus, consolidating itself as a space for strategic reflection that connects university research, public policy and professional practice.
The academic programme is structured around eight thematic panels that address, from a comprehensive perspective, key issues such as water and food security in the face of global crises, European Union strategies and policies, financing instruments, the preservation of natural resources, and the fight against water and food waste. It also examines the role of technological innovation, water reuse, new techniques applied to the agri-food sector, and the modernisation of hydraulic infrastructure.
One of the central pillars of the event will be the Mediterranean Dialogues on Water and Food Security, conceived as a forum for exchange among leaders of the main river basin authorities and water agencies. This forum will enable the sharing of experiences, best practices and common challenges in the management of a strategic resource for the economic and social development of the territory.
The congress is supported by public institutions, regional administrations and organisations from the agri-food and environmental sectors, consolidating its position as a benchmark event for water and food governance in the Mediterranean context. In doing so, the Mediterranean Forum on Water, Energy and Food strengthens its role as a stable platform for inter-university cooperation and knowledge transfer aimed at informed and sustainable decision-making.
Established as a non-profit association, the MFWEF acts as a platform dedicated to the study, research, teaching and dissemination of knowledge around the water–energy–food nexus. As its Director, Esteban Arimany, notes, the Forum’s objective is “to continue opening ourselves up to society and productive sectors wherever we are needed, fostering public–private collaboration and defending the interests of Mediterranean regions through integrated management of water, energy and food resources.”
