The spring of 2023 is proving to be one of the driest of the century on the Iberian Peninsula. March was a particularly dry month and, according to data from the Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), it was also one of the warmest of the century, with 1.8ºC above average for this time of year.

In this context and on the occasion of the investiture as Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Lleida of Professor Elías Fereres (University of Cordoba, Institute of Sustainable Agriculture-CSIC), the conference “Water and agriculture: Research and development for sustainable agriculture in a context of water scarcity” will take place on 13rd June.

The event will be held in the auditorium of the Escola Tècnica Superior d’Enginyeria Agroalimentària i Forestal i de Veterinària de Lleida (ETSEAFIV), from 15:30 to 20:30. Registration is open through this link.  In addition, the conference can be followed online through the YouTube channel of the Spanish Royal Academy of Engineering.

During the conference, the scientific and technological progress of the last decades will be analyzed, in particular on efficient irrigation, adaptation to climate change, remote sensing in water management or the use of water in rainfed systems.

The social challenges posed by the use of water in agriculture in the coming years will not be forgotten. In a second part, these issues will be debated by speakers from universities, hydrographic confederations, NGOs, irrigation communities and government departments.

Professor Fereres, who will close the conference, has had a profound impact on the scientific and technological development of agricultural sciences and their transfer to society, particularly in the field of water management in agriculture and in the Lleida area.
