{"id":5571,"date":"2026-05-04T08:35:47","date_gmt":"2026-05-04T06:35:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/agrotecnio.org\/en\/?p=5571"},"modified":"2026-05-04T08:35:48","modified_gmt":"2026-05-04T06:35:48","slug":"la-calor-extrema-amenaca-lordi-cerveser-resorma-identifica-claus-per-fer-lo-mes-resilient","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/agrotecnio.org\/en\/la-calor-extrema-amenaca-lordi-cerveser-resorma-identifica-claus-per-fer-lo-mes-resilient\/","title":{"rendered":"Extreme heat threatens malting barley:\u00a0ResOrMa\u00a0identifies\u00a0key factors for making it more resilient\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>A project by\u00a0Agrotecnio, Damm\u2019s La Moravia malting plant,\u00a0Semillas\u00a0Batlle and\u00a0Cupasa\u00a0has\u00a0analysed\u00a0the impact of heat stress and nitrogen on malt yield and quality<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heatwaves, which are becoming increasingly frequent, can seriously&nbsp;jeopardise&nbsp;the production of malting barley.&nbsp;The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/resorma.agrotecnio.org\/ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ResOrMa<\/a>&nbsp;project, has provided new evidence pointing to&nbsp;possible solutions&nbsp;to address this challenge,&nbsp;identifying&nbsp;strategies to improve the crop\u2019s resilience and preserve malt quality in the context of climate change.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The results show that episodes of heat stress during grain filling can significantly reduce yield,&nbsp;mainly due to&nbsp;grain weight loss. However, the response is not uniform: the study has&nbsp;identified&nbsp;significant genetic variability between varieties, which makes it possible to&nbsp;identify&nbsp;more resistant varieties and&nbsp;opens&nbsp;new avenues for plant breeding.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another key factor is nitrogen&nbsp;fertilization. Although it can boost yields under normal conditions, the project shows that it can also make the crop more vulnerable to heat stress,&nbsp;exacerbating&nbsp;losses in extreme conditions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1124\" height=\"701\" src=\"https:\/\/agrotecnio.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/04\/a8e00f6b-f063-49c3-aee5-0f67f0f6a893-2-1124x701.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5572\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agrotecnio.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/04\/a8e00f6b-f063-49c3-aee5-0f67f0f6a893-2-1124x701.jpg 1124w, https:\/\/agrotecnio.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/04\/a8e00f6b-f063-49c3-aee5-0f67f0f6a893-2-600x374.jpg 600w, https:\/\/agrotecnio.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/04\/a8e00f6b-f063-49c3-aee5-0f67f0f6a893-2-1536x958.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/agrotecnio.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/04\/a8e00f6b-f063-49c3-aee5-0f67f0f6a893-2.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1124px) 100vw, 1124px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">binary comment<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;impact&nbsp;of&nbsp;heatwaves&nbsp;also&nbsp;extends&nbsp;to&nbsp;quality.&nbsp;Research&nbsp;has&nbsp;found&nbsp;a&nbsp;reduction&nbsp;in malt&nbsp;extract, a&nbsp;key&nbsp;parameter&nbsp;for&nbsp;the&nbsp;brewing&nbsp;industry, as&nbsp;well&nbsp;as&nbsp;changes&nbsp;in&nbsp;other&nbsp;technological&nbsp;parameters,&nbsp;with&nbsp;potential&nbsp;implications&nbsp;for industrial processes&nbsp;and&nbsp;the&nbsp;stability&nbsp;of&nbsp;the&nbsp;final&nbsp;product.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for pre-harvest germination\u2014a phenomenon that can compromise grain quality&nbsp;in the event of&nbsp;rain prior to harvest\u2014the results&nbsp;indicate&nbsp;that there is also variability between varieties. This&nbsp;opens&nbsp;the possibility of improving their resistance without affecting the germination required for the malting process.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a clear focus on practical application,&nbsp;ResOrMa&nbsp;has combined research with the transfer of knowledge to the sector. Throughout the project, field days, technical sessions and&nbsp;a results&nbsp;presentation day have been organized, involving farmers, technical&nbsp;experts&nbsp;and companies across the value chain.
